Industrial Workwear — Specifying for Durability, Not Just Price

Industrial workwear is the only uniform category where the garment is in a fight. Abrasion, heat, oil, industrial laundering and repeated stress at the same four or five points destroy it in a way office wear is never subjected to. Specifying it well means knowing where it fails first — and being clear about the line between hard-wearing workwear and certified protective equipment, which is not the same thing.

The Short Answer

Specify industrial workwear around three things: the fabric weight and weave that matches your abrasion level, the construction at stress points — which is where garments actually fail — and the laundering regime the garment will face, which is usually harsher than anything the wearer does to it.

The limit, stated first because it matters most: Wearzo does not manufacture hi-vis, flame-retardant, chemical-resistant or any other certified protective apparel, and does not certify garments to EN, ANSI, ISO or equivalent safety classes. Rainwear and ponchos are sourced rather than made here. If a role requires certified PPE, it must come from a manufacturer who can supply a valid test report for the exact fabric and trim. Workwear vs Certified Protective Equipment

These get conflated in procurement documents constantly, and the confusion is expensive in both directions — buying certified PPE where durable workwear would do, or worse, buying workwear where the role genuinely needs PPE.

Durable workwear is specified by you: fabric, weight, construction, reinforcement, colour and branding. Its job is to survive the environment and identify the wearer. "Standards" here means the specification you write and hold the supplier to, and the sample you approve it against.

Certified protective equipment is specified by a published safety class and evidenced by a test report against that class for the exact fabric and trim used. Flame resistance, chemical resistance, high-visibility conspicuity and cut protection all sit here. No amount of heavyweight cotton drill makes a garment flame-retardant, and no supplier claim substitutes for a test report.

The practical rule: run your role list past whoever owns safety on your site before you write the specification. Roles that need a certified class get sourced from a certified supplier. Everything else — which on most sites is the majority of the workforce — is a workwear specification, and that is what the rest of this page is about.

Knees and Seat

The first failure on almost every trouser and coverall, and the reason bottom-weight fabric choice matters more than shirt fabric. Kneeling, squatting and sitting on hard surfaces abrade the same square inches every day. A denser weave and a heavier weight buy real months here, and knee reinforcement buys more.

Seams at Stress Points

Crotch, underarm, shoulder and pocket-mouth seams take the load every time someone reaches, climbs or lifts. Garments far more often split at a seam than wear through a panel. Bar-tacking at pocket corners and stress points, and a stronger seam construction on the main load seams, is a small specification detail with a large effect on service life.

Cuffs, Hems and Pocket Edges

Edges fray first because they meet everything. Turned and stitched hems with adequate allowance last longer and also leave room to alter, which matters when garments are re-issued.

Closures

Zips and buttons are the cheapest component and a common reason a perfectly good garment is retired. On coveralls especially, a heavier-duty closure is worth specifying rather than accepting whatever comes as standard.

Colour, Under Laundering

Not a structural failure but the one that decides when a garment looks finished. Industrial laundering — hot water, strong detergent, high-temperature drying — is far harsher than domestic washing, and it is what fades and greys workwear long before it wears through. See the wash-care guide.

The Specification That Actually Buys Durability

Six lines that change how long a garment lasts, all of which cost very little to state and a great deal to discover missing:

  • Fabric, blend and GSM per garment — heavier and denser on bottoms and coveralls than on shirts. Without a stated GSM you are not comparing bids; see the fabric and GSM guide.
  • Weave — a drill or twill's diagonal structure resists abrasion better than a plain weave at the same weight, which is why it dominates workwear bottoms.
  • Reinforcement points — name them: bar-tacks at pocket corners and stress points, and knee or seat reinforcement where the work justifies it.
  • Seam construction on load seams — crotch, underarm and shoulder. This is where garments split.
  • Closure grade — especially on coveralls, where a failed zip retires an otherwise sound garment.
  • Laundering regime — tell the manufacturer whether these go to industrial laundry or home wash. It changes the fabric and finish recommendation.
Practicalities

Two Things Sites Consistently Underestimate

Workwear is worn over other clothing. A coverall sized to a body measurement will not fit over a shirt and trousers in winter. Size the outer layer for the layers under it, or run the fit exercise with people wearing what they actually wear — this is the most common sizing error in the sector, and it produces garments that are technically correct and practically unwearable.

Colour choice is a maintenance decision. Deep and saturated shades show fade and chemical marking soonest under industrial laundering; very light shades show soiling immediately. Mid-tones survive the look test longest, which is why so much workwear is mid-blue, grey or olive. Department colour-coding still works within that range.
